Stacey & Alesha

Better Together

This is the love story of one of Black Gay Weddings most beloved couples, Stacey & Alesha, winners of the BGW Lip-Sync Challenge.

An essential component of any relationship is teamwork and the ability to work together, and with the exception of the kayak incident, which we will soon explain, Stacey & Alesha have become the perfect team of forever-lovers. Their love and lives are a true reflection of the theme they chose for their wedding day, “Better Together.”

There’s nothing like a great burger to break the ice! Our couple’s journey together began on a June night in 2015, when Alesha took Stacey to one of her favorite restaurants, Hopdoddy Burger Bar.

This was their first date, and things were a little slow at first. Alesha may or may not have been a bit nervous initially, but when the waiter got the burger order mixed up between them, things took an interesting turn.  Alesha recalls, “I didn’t realize the waiter got it wrong until I took a huge bite of Stacey’s burger; it was the worst burger I ever had at Hoppdoddy. I was definitely judging Stacey a little, thinking, ‘who gets a burger with just cheese, lettuce, & mayo?'” Not wanting to simply exchange burgers in judgment, and REALLY wanting the burger she ordered,  Alesha suggested they split and share them. The rest of the date was filled with lively and engaging conversation.

The second date, well, remember the “Kayak Incident” we mentioned earlier? Stacey had invited Alesha to go kayaking, and Stacey remembers, “Her first question was ‘will I get wet?’ I told her, No. The last time I went, I didn’t get wet.” Alesha had a tough time finding the dock, and when she finally arrived, she appeared to be wearing brand new WHITE Converse kicks (hmmm…Kayaking Right???). Stacey adds, “she joined me in the tandem kayak & off we went. It didn’t take long to figure out we weren’t a very good team when it came to kayaking.” They ran into seemingly everything in their path, even knocking a paddle-boarder off his board. Although they didn’t capsize, they were soaked through, and those kicks, what’s the word? Squishy? When they made it back to shore, Alesha squished ahead, not knowing that Stacy was struggling to drag the kayak back to the rental shack behind her. They ended the date by playing dominoes and watching movies with friends. Since Alesha was good at dominoes, Stacey decided to cut her some slack for the kayaking incident. Although, Stacey admits, “Alesha said she told her friends she would have never talked to me again if we capsized, LOL.” Thank goodness for steady waters.

Many “non-kayaking” successful dates later, Alesha was convinced that Stacey was who she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. On November 7, 2017, Alesha proposed to Stacey and shares with us, “The night I proposed to Stacey was the best night of my life! I’m sure she saw it coming because she’s a private investigator on the side, lol.” As we watched the proposal video, it was like witnessing the creation of a great love story in real-time. It was beautiful and, at one point, funny to watch. Alesha also shared, “I knew exactly what I wanted to say to Stacey, but clearly, she didn’t hear a word I said because she said ‘YES’ before I even asked. I told her, I didn’t ask you yet.”  After the proposal, the newly enGAYged couple enjoyed a romantic dinner and an evening of laughter, love, and reflection.

On November 30, 2018, at the Canyonwood Ridge, in Austin, Texas, and in the presence of family and friends, Stacey & Alesha were united as Wife & Wife. Their vows emotionally moved us from tears to laughter. Alesha’s vows included, “You make me want to be better for you every single day…you are my best friend and the love of my life, and I am so blessed to spend the rest of my life with you, forever…No Take Backs.”  Stacey’s vows included, “I promise to respect you, admire you, appreciate you, and always pray for you… I promise to remember we are both imperfect but perfect for each other.”  And we can all agree, these two beautiful souls truly are perfect for each other.

The ceremony was beautiful! Stacey wore a beautiful and elegant white wedding dress designed with lace, floral patterns, and crystals, with a matching veil. Alesha wore a chic custom-tailored blue suit and pink tie, which perfectly complemented her wife. The wedding party wore pink dresses and gray suits. The wedding venue was the ideal location for this celebration of love.  With high ceilings, large windows, and a dramatic hilltop view, there was ample natural light to illuminate the occasion giving Stacey & Alesha even more of a glow. After the ceremony, everyone moved to the venue’s large reception hall and continued the celebration well into the evening. At the end of the night, everyone held up sparklers as Stacey & Alesha walked by them and rode off into the night.
